Blog 1: Online Presence

Ahh, what to say about this topic! I don't have a major personal online presence, and I have no professional online presence (other than this blog!!). I have a Facebook and Instagram, and that's all I use. I have Facebook mostly to keep in contact with friends and family, but I rarely post anything other than the occasional picture or meme. The same goes for my personal Instagram, except I use Instagram for (obviously) pictures and the rare video. I actually used to have a professional Instagram account back when I was doing hair in an attempt to promote myself. However, I didn't do the best job at keeping up with it. I really did not enjoy the business side of doing hair (which involved marketing), so I was never good at keeping up with my Instagram. And last but not least... I'm not sure if it's worth mentioning because I never posted on the platform, but I also made a Twitter at one point. I was never really sure what to do with it since I don't post on social media often.

I know it is definitely important to keep a good professional online presence, such as a website or a LinkedIn. Or, in my case back when I was doing hair, an Instagram. The world revolves around the internet now, and it's the most common way for professionals to network with each other, and put themselves out there. My lack of online presence when I was doing hair really hurt my business. I had little to no self-advertising, and that's extremely important as a hair dresser. When people are looking for a stylist, a hair color, or a haircut, Instagram is one of the first places they look. (I know it's the first place I jump to!) Having an online presence is really important, and I shouldn't make the mistake of neglecting an online presence again.

Other than not being particularly good at keeping up with social media pages, I also wasn't sure what to put on a professional website or a LinkedIn, especially since I'm still young and don't have a ton of major accomplishments yet. Looking at the examples last week helped, because I realized the page can be simple, and even includes things I'm simply interested in, such as news on topics I enjoy, and even include things I'm currently working on. I'm looking forward to learning more about how to do this stuff in this class so I know where to start!
