Problem solving

Careers in computing and IT all involve strong problem solving skills. As a former Computer Science, and current Applied computing major, I have been in several high level math classes and coding classes that have helped me to think analytically, and break a problem down step by step in order to solve it.

When I get stuck on a problem, I start out by figuring out what parts I know how to do, and what parts I am not sure about. At first I try to solve the problem by myself, then look through notes, then the text book, and then the internet.

This will help me to solve problems on my own,

Communication

College has taught me a lot about how to properly work in a group and deal with inevitable conflicts. This semester in my coding class we were told to work in groups. My 2nd teammate ended up being significantly better at coding than myself and our 3rd teammate, and this became a problem because he did the bulk of the work with our first 2 assignments. On top of that, we had poor communication as a whole and none of us were on the same page. I decided I needed to address the issues.

I started out by asking our 2nd teammate if we were still working in a group again, he said sure, and I went on to say that we’ve all had some communication issues. I explained me and the 3rd teammate recognized that he was much more skilled at coding than we were, and we felt bad because we felt like he was carrying us through the homework because of our differences in skill level, and we didn't want that. He was very receptive to the conversation and apologized, and was glad to answer questions about coding for us and explain his thought process if we were ever stuck, rather than just sending us his finished work. Being able to bring up a conflict like this in the work place will be very valuable, because sometimes people get scared to bring up issues, and just let them get worse and worse.

Organization

Organization is something I learned while I was working for myself, but it has been practiced even more while in school.

I have had to learn to keep computer files organized or else I will lose assignments. Keeping files organized is especially important for coding, or else you will lose them. Files for a project need to be sorted into folders so they are easy to access and find. In the work place, you may not be the only person trying to use these files, and other people need to find them as well.

This semester I also got an iPad to use for my notes, and this has helped keep my notes very organized. I have a folder for each class, and come next semester, I will put all of these folders into a "Fall Semester" folder. I will do the same for my classes next semester. After that, I will be able to put both semester folders into a "ASU year 1" folder. If I ever need to access my notes in the future, it will be super easy to find everything.

This will be very helpful for my future career because I will be able to quickly pull up everything my job may need, and I will always know what I need to get done.
