Week 10

This week I did DNA isolation twice for deinococcus aquaticus. The first one turned out VERY well and measured at 422 on the nondrop.... but there wasn’t a lot of solution. :( then I redid it again, and the number was lower, at 121. Darn!

Week 9

This week we planned on doing bacteria isolation, but apparently there’s something wonky with the kit we had, so we were waiting for a new one to arrive. In the mean time, I did more research on protein active sites, residues, and motifs. One of the other lab students taught everyone how to do a BLAST on protein on NCBI, which I was already familiar with since I’ve been doing nucleotide blasts with Chad. On Saturday I actually did a blast on the protein sequences for the deinococcus bacteria for Stacy, which I had a lot of fun with. I’ve been enjoying the bioinformatics stuff a lot. I’m glad I started learning it, because I really look forward to it every week.

Week 8

This week I finished up the gram stains, and continued stuff with Chad. He’s mostly having me do research on protein active sites... which is A LOT. We also did bacteria isolation. I finally got a chance to meet up with the computer science group as well. They’ve been trying to get tensor flow uploaded onto the raspberry pi, which has been a huge challenge.

Week 7

This week we did LOTS OF GRAM STAINS. And I also made DNA primers with Chad.

Week 6

For week 6 we did a flash gel. The results are at the top. I will also be helping Chad and Stacey with their project and learning about bioinformatics. The picture just above shows the genes for different species of deinococcus.
